This important project is being implemented near Gradačac, in the north of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with the aim of providing new homes to socially endangered women who are still struggling with the consequences of the war in this country. The initiator of this project is Mrs. Hazima Smajlović, who is originally from Gradačac, but currently lives in Switzerland.
The Engineer Without Borders Switzerland project team is responsible for project management and financing, coordination, planning as well as house building. All this is happening with the goal of promoting and strengthening women's autonomy.
The project is also supported by the humanitarian organization „Naš izvor“.
The project in Gradačac in many aspects is a pilot project. On one hand, a way of communal living is being implemented which is not yet widely accepted in Bosnia. On the other hand, also the participatory character of the project and the fact that only women will live in the house are rather unusual concepts for Bosnia.
The project aims to serve as a positive example and to demonstrate how dis- advantaged or neglected population groups can be supported. It also aims to give the affected women a stronger voice. In order to achieve this, the municipality of Gradačac and the corresponding ministries of the Canton of Tuzla are actively involved in the project.
As already mentioned, with the initiator Smajlović, the project is supported by the organization Engineers Without Borders Switzerland, the architectural studio TEN, and other participants.
The total value of the project is 227,500 CHF.
